About this recording
This release marks the 20th anniversary of the Ondine label in 2005. His personal great appreciation for the music of Ravel prompted Reijo Kiilunen to name his company after the first movement of Ravel's piano cycle Gaspard de la nuit, when he started business in 1985.
This CD includes the title piece Ondine both in its orchestration by Marius Constant, performed by the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach, as well as in the original piano version, performed by Tzimon Barto. Gaspard de la nuit was written on an inspiration drawn from three poems by Aloysius Bertrand (1807–1841), which are also included on this recording, recited by the great French actress Carole Bouquet.

The artists
Tzimon Barto
Recognized as one of the foremost American pianists of his generation, Tzimon Barto has been giving exciting and highly acclaimed performances on both sides of the Atlantic. Born and raised in Florida, Tzimon Barto received his first piano lessons from his grandmother at the age of five, and later attended the Juilliard School of Music, studying piano with Adele Marcus. While at Juilliard he won the Gina Bachauer Competition two consecutive years in a row. Additionally, Tzimon Barto was a conducting fellow and coach for the American Opera Center. At the Tanglewood Institute, he received the "Most Outstanding Student Award", presented by Gunther Schuller for his achievements as a young conductor.
Orchestre de Paris
Founded in 1967, the Orchestre de Paris grew out of the renowned Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, the oldest symphonic ensemble in France, which was established in 1828 by François Habeneck, who was the first exponent of Beethoven's symphonies in France.
