About this recording

Celebrated soprano Karita Mattila has proved herself to be irresistible in any musical genre. This compilation couples live performances of some of the world's best-loved opera arias together with the Finnish diva's unique interpretations of songs from Broadway musicals and the Great American Songbook. Included are two previously unreleased tracks from her earlier live recorded Fever album (ODE 1105-2): Misty (track 13) and 'Round Midnight (14).

These recordings showcase highlights from the past fifteen years of Karita Mattila's career, with studio recordings from 1995 (tracks 7–11) and 1997 (6), as well as live recordings from her 40th birthday concert at Helsinki's Hartwall Arena in 2000 (tracks 1–5) and from 2007 at Tampere Hall in Finland.

Karita Mattila is the biggest Finnish star on the international stage of classical music. She has been named by Musical America the “most electrifying actress of our day (who) drives the public into frenzies” (Musician of the Year 2005). This release marks her 50th birthday in 2010, coinciding with Ondine’s 25th anniversary.

A very attractive disc where one of the world’s leading opera singers proves that she has several other strings to her bow.

Werner Pfister, Fono Forum, August 2010

The artists

Karita Mattila

Winner of the first 'Singer of the World' competition in Cardiff, Karita Mattila is recognised as much for the beauty and versatility of her lyric voice as for her extraordinary stage ability. Under such conductors as Claudio Abbado, James Levine, Sir Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen, she has sang in all the major opera houses and festivals of the world performing repertoire which encompasses Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Janácek. Her affinity with the dramatic side of opera has produced marvellous results when working with fine stage directors such as Luc Bondy who helped her to achieve a remarkable performance in his highly acclaimed Don Carlos, seen in Paris, London and at the Edinburgh Festival. Likewise, Lev Dodin in his productions of Elektra for the Salzburg Easter Festival and Pique Dame and Salome at the Opera Bastille, Peter Stein for his production of Simon Boccanegra in Salzburg, Robert Carsen in his production of Lohengrin at the Bastille and Jürgen Flimm for his Fidelio in New York.
