About this recording
“How strange! I can very clearly feel the smell of snow.” – Jean Sibelius
The surrounding nature formed an integral source of inspiration for Finland’s ‘national composer’ Jean Sibelius. Sibelius’ music is often linked in the minds of people with winter and snow. Although Sibelius enjoyed the beauty of all seasons, he also suffered from bouts of depression during the winter months. This final instalment of ‘Sibelius’ four seasons’ includes several of Sibelius’ winter-themed compositions, including his Christmas songs, Op. 1, as well as music from his austere 4th Symphony.
