About this recording

This recording features the twelve-tone opera Kaivos (The Mine) by Einojuhani Rautavaara who also wrote the libretto (sung in Finnish). The opera in three acts tells the story of an uprising by mine workers somewhere in Europe at the end of the 1950s.

Rautavaara wrote this, his first opera, from 1957-62 and today considers it, "perhaps the best opera I have ever written, a real thriller whose underlying theme - that a human being defines himself through his choices - is nevertheless universal."

This CD release represents a real highlight in the work's exceptional history: the recording was made in connection with the première live (concert) performance of the opera in Tampere (Finland) in September 2010. The opera's underlying thematic allusions to the 1956 Hungarian uprising originally impeded a staged performance in Finland, a neighboring country of the then-Soviet Union. Instead, a TV production was broadcast in 1963, making Kaivos the first Finnish Television opera.

(...) Positiv hervorzuheben ist die Klangqualität der Aufnahme.
Lisa Otto, Klassik.com, 18.7.2011

Hannu Lintu conducts a carefully prepared and superbly committed performance that does this strongly expressive opera full justice ... at long last. The quality of the singing and of the playing is perfectly matched by some fine recording and the booklet is a model of its kind. I have no hesitation whatsoever in endorsing this powerful opera which the composer considers as his best - a finding with which I fully agree. This magnificent release is my recording of the month and will be high up in my list of Records of the Year.
Hubert Culot, MusicWeb-International, June 2011, Recording of the Month

Hannu Lintu coordonne ses troupes en chef efficace et nous livre, in fine, de la belle ouvrage. Le jalon manquant à découvrir ?
Jean-Luc Caron, ResMusica.com, 1 juin 2011, La Clef ResMusica.com

This recording fills a major gap in the Rautavaara discography and fills it with distinction.
David Fanning, Gramophone, June 2011

Rautavaara that resonates (...). Kaivos is more thought-provoking than ever.
Hilary Finch, BBC Music Magazine, May 2011, Opera Choice

Teoksen draamallinen kokonaiskaarros piirtyy voimakkaana. (...)

Thomas Anderberg, Dagens Nyheter, 6.4.2011

Solistit tekevät luontevaa jälkeä, vaikka puhtaassa dodekafoniassa on omat hankaluutensa.
Kare Eskola, YLE Radio 1, 24.2.2011

Einojuhani Rautavaaran ensimmäinen ooppera Kaivos oli ajankohtainen ja rohkea (...) puherytmiä noudattavat lauluosuudet laajenevat aariamaisiksi kaarroksiksi. Väriä tuovat radion säestämä jazz-laulu, narrimainen juomalaulu ja jylhästi paisuva kirkkolaulu. (...) Jaakko Kortekangas Pappina vakuuttaa alusta asti. (...) Hannu Linnun jännitettä muovaava panos on ratkaiseva.
Jukka Isopuro, Helsingin Sanomat, 12.2.2011

Suomalaisen oopperan unohdettuihin mestariteoksiin kuuluva Einojuhani Rautavaaran 50 vuotta sitten säveltämä Kaivos on ajankohtaisempi kuin koskaan. (...) laulajien artikulaatio on yhtä selkeyden juhlaa. (...) Jorma Hynninen komissaarina on äänellisesti vahva kuin tammi. (...) Hannu Linnun johdolla Tampere Filharmonia soittaa (...) vuoroin leimahtelevan iskevästi, paikoin taas läpikuultavalla herkkyydellä. (...) Rautavaaran ilmaisuvoimassaan jatkuvasti tihentyvä musiikki kantaa teosta johdonmukaisesti yhä syvemmälle ihmismielen syvyyksiin.
Harri Hautala, Aamulehti, 7.2.2011
