This new release by Ondine offers a unique glimpse into the flute chamber works of Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952), one of the leading contemporary composers internationally. The disc includes works covering four decades, from 1982 to 2012 performed by flutist Camilla Hoitenga. Hoitenga is joined by cellist Anssi Karttunen, Da Camera of Houston, baritonist Daniel Belcher and harpist Héloïse Dautry.
Kaija Saariaho and Camilla Hoitenga met for the first time in 1982 and their collaboration has been active for many years. Hoitenga has partly inspired several of the compositions heard on this disc. Besides premiering flute works by Saariaho, she has championed Saariaho's flute works around the world.
This release includes, among others, the world premiere recording of Sombre, a work originally commisioned by the Da Camera Society of Houston, Texas to be premiered at the Rothko Chapel.
Sleeve notes in English, French and Finnish.
Flutist Camilla Hoitenga brings her eclectic repertoire and charismatic performances with her wherever she goes, to Berlin or New York, the Kremlin in Moscow or the Forbidden City in Beijing. Whether accompanied by orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony or the London Philharmonic, or playing alone on stage, Camilla captivates her audiences by her intense performances, acclaimed by the press as "brilliant", "alluring" and "ideally transparent and precise".
The Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen is one of the most renowned and versatile musicians in the classical music world today and enjoys a busy career as a soloist and chamber music player. He performs on modern cello, classical and baroque cellos and on violoncello piccolo. Anssi Karttunen performs all the standard cello works, but has also discovered many forgotten masterpieces and arranged a number of pieces for cello. He is a passionate advocate of contemporary music and his collaboration with composers has led him to give over 50 world premieres of works by composers such as Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho (including Notes on Light in 2007, which he recorded; ODE 1130-2), Rolf Wallin, Luca Francesconi and Tan Dun.
Héloïse Dautry studied harp with Evelyne Haut-Labourdette at the Conservatoire National de Montpellier where she won First Prize in 1996 and with Brigitte Sylvestre at the Conservatoire National de Paris where she graduated in 1999 with the First Prize for harp; she has also studied with Marie-Claire Jamet and Fabrice Pierre.
