About this recording

This CD features Kari Kriikku with 20th-century works for clarinet and orchestra, including two new works by Finnish contemporary composers. Jukka-Pekka Saraste leads the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Debussy's Rhapsody and Jukka Tiensuu's one-movement Concerto "Puro" (Finnish for "a stream"), and the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra in Jouni Kaipainen's Clarinet Concerto.

Prior to making these première recordings, Finnish clarinetist Kari Kriikku closely collaborated with Tiensuu and Kaipainen for the composition of the concertos and gave the first performances.

The artists

Kari Kriikku

Hailed by the New York Times as “A physically flamboyant player of Olympian virtuosity…”, Kari Kriikku has been a living inspiration behind a great number of remarkable Finnish compositions for the clarinet. On stage and through recordings, he has championed concertos and chamber works written for him by Kimmo Hakola, Jouni Kaipainen, Magnus Lindberg, Uljas Pulkkis, Kaija Saariaho, and Jukka Tiensuu. Above all, Kari Kriikku has premiered the entire output for clarinet by Magnus Lindberg. His recording of the Clarinet Concerto earned him both a Gramophone Award and a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2006. Furthermore he has championed the clarinet works of Jukka Tiensuu. Both concerto works Puro (“brook”, or “Bach” in German) and Missa he has performed more than fifty times.

Avanti! Chamber Orchestra

The Avanti! Chamber Orchestra was founded at the initiative of Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jukka-Pekka Saraste in 1983. It was founded to satisfy a need for high-quality ensemble work by enthusiastic and highly skilled musicians, and because it was recognized that a great deal of contemporary music and other rare repertoire would remain unperformed otherwise. Avanti! has responded admirably to the challenge that it set itself: many new musical ideas in Finland have been channelled through it.
